About Paul Payne
Paul Payne
Collector of stories.
Mediocre golfer.
Lover of God, one woman, my family.
Champion for people & legacies.
My entrance into the world of golf journalism did not come by invitation. Instead, it was my attempt to connect back to an era when golf stories abounded in Chattanooga.
It was in 2023, after recognizing there was no one covering amateur golf in the Chattanooga area, that I stepped forward to fill that void. The region has such a rich golf history that for years was chronicled in depth, so I reached out to the publisher of Chattanoogan.com to see if I could start writing stories in his daily online newspaper.
I never dreamed how that simple idea would evolve, allowing me to serve as the primary golf writer in the state of Tennessee given the privilege of telling so many exceptional stories. More importantly, it has provided the opportunity to meet some amazing people within the sport who have become lasting friends.
As a member of the Golf Writers Association of America, this odyssey has given me access to many of the legends of the game while granting me the privilege of having my stories shared in reputable national golf publications.
Unfortunately, this odyssey has done nothing to improve my own golfing skills. However, it has deepened my appreciation of the sport and the personalities that make it a unique community. At the encouragement of many, I have decided to create a place where my works can be compiled which is the inspiration behind this website.
I have often said that “great stories tell themselves; I just simply help frame them with words.” It is my hope to continue to tell compelling stories that are uplifting, tales of achievement, perseverance, and redemption.
I have always been drawn to good storytellers, those individuals who have the unique ability to weave together sentences in a special manner that leaves the reader yearning for more. Their style of writing is more about the journey than the destination, stirring one’s emotions along the way that brings about a sense of renewal, reflection, and enlightenment.
I was first exposed to such talented wordsmiths while working my way through college as a part-time sportswriter at the Chattanooga News-Free Press from 1979 to 1983. It was an amazing chapter of life surrounded by a staff of so many great writers who still remain friends even today.
As much as I loved that four-year stretch, I chose a different path that led me to Montgomery, Alabama for 32 years working in a completely different realm. For more than four decades I have served as a wealth consultant to families and business owners, helping them author their own story and guiding the script to a favorable ending.
It would be 21 years before I would see my byline in print again. The Montgomery Advertiser was short-handed in covering local prep football and caught wind of my previous experience in college. So, for the next decade, a was able to tell stories written about area private schools that served as an additional connection point with many of my clients.
That led to an opportunity in 2014 to begin covering Alabama football as a freelance writer as part of the USA Today affiliates. It was an incredible experience to have a front-row seat to the Crimson Tide’s historical run of success during the next five years, something I continued even after moving back to Chattanooga in 2016.
Once that window closed covering college football, I discovered an open lane in the world of amateur golf that needed someone to tell its stories. I have been energized to continue writing about people whose exploits and accomplishments might otherwise go unnoticed. The stories are there. It is up to me to find them and put them into words.
Thank you for your willingness to partner with me in this endeavor!
“I first met Paul a few weeks into my job as Head Men's Golf Coach when I started four years ago. It has evolved into more of a friendship than a working relationship largely in part by Paul's caring and genuine nature. You can always tell Paul's articles are a result of effort, professionalism, and emotion. He does a fantastic job reengaging with a younger generation that has moved away from reading articles digitally. That's why I think so many of his articles have been impactful to the golf community here in Chattanooga. I'm very thankful for the impact he has had on our athletic department, our golf program, and my family just through telling our stories.”
